What happens if I leave my pension to my partner?

Ian and Ruth have been married for thirty years. Lee and Maggie have been together just as long, but never married. From April 2027, that one difference matters a lot. Ruth would pay no inheritance tax on the pension Ian leaves her. Maggie could face a bill of up to £120,000 on Lee’s. The video explains why, and clears up the idea of a “common-law” husband or wife, which doesn’t exist in England and Wales. It also covers the scheme form that says who you’d like your pension to go to, and why it’s worth checking yours.
